8 MW Platform
The 8 MW platform is based on the tried and tested 5 MW platform, improved thanks to invaluable experience at sea. The AD 8-180 has a 180-meter diameter rotor and the highest annual energy production (AEP) in the industry, going beyond any known limit reached by the offshore wind industry so far.
The wind turbine has the industry’s highest-rated gearbox, boosting 70% higher torque capacity with only a 20% increase in weight compared with gearboxes used in 6MW-plus turbines. The components have been tested individually before the full drivetrain and finally the complete nacelle was assembled and tested at Fraunhofer IWES Dynamic Nacelle Testing laboratory.
The 88 meters blades have been designed taking into account the best combination between swept area, energy production, drivetrain and weight as well as the loads transferred to the wind turbine. In combination with turbine operating points the optimum balance of plant costs is achieved, contributing to one of the most competitive LCoE in the industry. Moreover, the blade and drivetrain design have been conceived with scalability in mind to enable further development of Adwen’s 8 MW platform in response to market needs.
The AD 8-180 has already been selected to equip three offshore wind farms in France for a total of close to 1.5 GW for customers including Iberdrola, Engie, EDPR and RES. In addition, the new platform is widely recognized as a key addition to the industry. The first prototype of the turbine is installed in Bremerhaven (Germany) and serial production is expected in 2018.
